Reading Our reading and language arts program is a relatively new collection of themed units using non-fiction articles and literature-based material, combining the reading of a variety of novels and incorporating specific skill instruction. Pre-reading activities, in-depth close reading, vocabulary, comprehension checks, and examinations of literary techniques will accompany all assigned reading. Additionally, there will be practice and homework sheets related to the articles and stories we read in class. These skills will aid students in both their independent reading and writing skills. Reading assignments will often tie in with social studies or science topics. Writing
Writing assignments are included in ELA, Science, and Social Studies. At 5th grade much emphasis is placed on non-fiction reading and responses to text, in both short answer and good essay construction. Students work on supporting answers with evidence from the text and/or defending their reasoning. We emphasize good penmanship for all assignments.
